What is Poetry Good For?

Poetry, much like visual arts can be good for a few different things. It’s entertainment, some people read books of poetry when they’re bored, some go online to poetry websites to pass time. I think poetry can also be a really powerful way to express oneself. Poetry is good for expressing emotions and thoughts in a different way than plain speech.

            The symbolist poem was really difficult for me to write and I think the hardest part was developing a meaningful symbol and using it symbolically instead of literally. It’s hard to come up with a symbol and then write about it in a way that’s not super obvious and directly connecting the symbol and what it symbolizes.

            I don’t think my poem was super successful. I tried really hard to allude to the conflicting emotions of being in solitude by including both positive and negative metaphors but I don’t think it was as effective of some of the other symbolist poems in the class. I think some of the poems that were allegorical or made allusions were really effective and in the future I might look into doing something like that. I want to continue to improve and be more confident writing poetry.
