Meaning in Art and Poetry
Meaning is important in poetry, it can give your poem depth and more dimension. Symbolism can take a pretty poem and make it even more interesting. It’s also important in visual arts, your art can be more powerful with an underlying meaning. Especially in abstract visual art, an artist can take a few random shapes and arrange them in such a way that it gives the shapes an idea or deeper meaning, and those shapes can say something. When creating compositions, just the way you arrange different assets can change the whole mood and intentions of the piece. It’s more interesting if the meaning isn’t super obvious, but if the audience can’t figure it out the meaning is somewhat lost so while I think it’s good to make the meaning hidden in a sense, it’s not effective to make it impossible. I think perhaps the meaning is most impactful when you have to contemplate the poem to understand it, however if nobody but the author understands it, it may be a little too unclear. Meaning is something to help shape an develop a poem or piece of visual art and give it purpose. It is an important thing to consider while creating.
